Made of finely woven silk (often “Katan” silk) and decorated with Zari (gold- and silver-metallic threads) or rich brocade work.
Characteristic motifs: intertwining floral & foliate patterns (kaalgat-bel), ‘Jhala’ (string of leaves) on the edge of the border, and net-like “jal” patterns.
The weaving process is labor-intensive; some sarees may take weeks to months to complete.
Historically a symbol of status, bridal wear and heritage craftsmanship.
